World Milk Day – June 1

Context:

  • World Milk Day is celebrated every year on June 1.
  •  The day was first commenced by the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations to highlight the global importance of milk.
  •  It’s been 20 years since the initiative began and today, the entire world celebrates the day to mark the significance of milk intake in our diet.

Importance of Milk

  • In India, the day holds a lot of importance considering we are an agricultural nation. Milk is the staple food in our diet ever since we are born.
  •  This is the same across cultures and regions in the entire country.
  •  The variation of using milk in cooking differs but it is an important part of at least one meal in a day.

Theme of the year:

  • Every year, the theme aims to spread more and more awareness about including milk and dairy products in the diet regularly.
  • Various NGOs and other organisation contributing to the cause also donate free milk packets to the underprivileged children and release new policy to make sure that at least children of all ages and in all regions get to have milk daily.

2019 Theme: Drink Milk.

2020 Theme: 20th Anniversary of World Milk Day.

National Missing Children’s Day

Context:

  • National Missing Children’s Day has been commemorated in the United States on May 25, since 1983, when it was first proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan.
  •  It falls on the same day as the International Missing Children’s Day, which was established in 2001.

Why this day is celebrated on May 25?

  • On May 25, 1979, Etan Patz was only six years old when he disappeared from his New York City home on his way from bus to school.
  • The date of his disappearance was designated as National Missing Children’s Day.
  • At the time, cases of missing children rarely garnered national media attention, but his case quickly received extensive coverage. 
  • In 2001, the tribute spread worldwide. ICMEC coordinates the Help Bring Them Home Campaign in 29 countries, in conjunction with International Missing Children’s Day, to spotlight the issue of child abduction around the world, and to suggest to parents some steps they can take to protect their children.

National Anti-Terrorism Day

Context:

  • The objective behind the observance of Anti-Terrorism Day is to spread the message of peace, humanity, unity and harmony among the people and make them aware about anti-social act of terrorism.

Why May 21 is observed as Anti – terrorism day?

  • May 21 is observed as Anti-terrorism day across India to commemorate the death anniversary of the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi who was assassinated on this day in 1991, by LTTE cadres in a suicide bombing attack at a rally at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu.

  • First announced under V.P. Singh government after the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, the day has been observed every year with the aim to highlight the importance of fighting with the activities of terrorism.

The pledge is;

  • “We, the people of India, having abiding faith in our country’s tradition of non-violence and tolerance, hereby solemnly affirm to oppose with strength, all forms of terrorism and violence.
  • We pledge to uphold and promote peace, social harmony, and understand among all fellow human beings and fight the forces of disruption threatening human lives and values.”

  • सिक्किम सरकार ने अपना 45 वां राज्य दिवस मनाया। हर साल मई 16 में सिक्किम अपना राज्य दिवस मनाता है क्योंकि 1975 में इस दिन राज्य अस्तित्व में आया था।

दिन के बारे में:

  • 1947 में भारत के स्वतंत्र होने के बाद, सिक्किम ने भारत के गणतंत्र के साथ रक्षा का दर्जा प्राप्त करना जारी रखा।
  •  हालाँकि, 1973 में, राज्य में शाही विरोधी दंगे हुए।
  • अंततः 1975 में सम्राट को पदच्युत कर दिया गया। एक जनमत संग्रह भारत में राज्य में शामिल हो गया।

  • प्रधान मंत्री उज्ज्वला योजना मई 2016 में शुरू की गई थी।
  • इस ऐप ने अपने कार्यान्वयन के चार साल पूरे किए।

योजना के बारे में:

  • इस योजना ने अब तक 8 करोड़ से अधिक परिवारों की मदद की है। योजना के तहत लगभग 8,432 करोड़ रुपये प्रत्यक्ष लाभ हस्तांतरण (डीबीटी) के माध्यम से स्थानांतरित किए गए हैं।
  • सफलता को चिह्नित करने के लिए, 16 मई, 2020 को केंद्रीय मंत्री श्री धर्मेंद्र प्रधान ने 1500 लाभार्थियों के साथ बातचीत की।
  • COVID -19 से लड़ने और लॉक डाउन के दौरान भारत के लोगों के जीवन को आसान बनाने के लिए, पीएम मोदी ने प्रधानमंत्री गरीब कल्याण योजना की शुरुआत की।

राजीव गांधी न्याय योजना:

  • छत्तीसगढ़ राज्य सरकार राजीव गांधी किसान न्याय योजना शुरू करने के लिए है।
  • यह योजना 21 मई, 2020 को शुरू की जानी है। यह योजना पूर्व प्रधानमंत्री राजीव गण की पुण्यतिथि के उपलक्ष्य में शुरू की जा रही है।

योजना के बारे में:

  • यह योजना राज्य की ग्रामीण अर्थव्यवस्था में 5,100 करोड़ रुपये का निवेश करेगी। यह डायरेक्ट बेनिफिट ट्रांसफर के जरिए किया जाना है।
  • योजना के प्रावधान राज्य बजट 2020-21 के दौरान किए गए थे।
  • इस योजना के तहत, किसानों को गन्ना, मक्का और धान जैसी फसलों के लिए प्रति एकड़ 10,000 रुपये का भुगतान किया जाना है।
  • योजना से 1.87 मिलियन से अधिक किसानों को लाभ होगा। तिलहन और दलहन के लिए पंजीकृत और अधिसूचित क्षेत्रों के आधार पर किसानों को धन हस्तांतरित किया जाना है।
  • ये योजनाएं राज्यों को आत्मनिर्भर बनाएंगी और देश में लागू होने वाले स्थानीय लोगों के लिए मुखर सहायता प्रदान करेंगी।

World Telecommunication day – May 17

Context:

  • The day marks the anniversary of the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and the establishment of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
  • It is celebrated every year with a new theme to raise awareness about the importance of communication and focuses on to increase the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The day also focuses on how information travels across the world.

What is the purpose of celebrating the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD)?

  • The main purpose of celebrating World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is to help in raising awareness in generating possibilities of using the internet, other information and communication technologies (ICT), bring them to societies and economies and create a way to bridge the digital divide.

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day: History

  • The Day commemorates the founding of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on 17 May, 1865.
  • On 17 May, 1969 first time World Telecommunication Day was celebrated annually, marking the founding of ITU and the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention in 1865. It was instituted by the Plenipotentiary Conference in Malaga-Torremolinos in 1973.
  • In November 2005, The World Summit on the Information Society called upon the UN General Assembly to declare 17 May as World Information Society Day.
  •  In March 2006, the General Assembly adopted a resolution that World Information Society Day shall be celebrated every year on 17 May. 
  • In November 2006, the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Antalya, Turkey decided to celebrate together World Telecommunication and Information Society Day on 17 May.
  • The theme was adopted by the Council annually and celebrates it by exchanging ideas and methods for making communication better.
  • We can’t ignore the fact that modernisation through the use of telephones, radio and computers has brought people closer. For the development in any field, it is important that information should travel around the globe.
  •  Therefore, The World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is dedicated to the evolution of communication and how information travels across the world.

What is Telecommunication?

  • Communication which is done over a distance by cable, telegraph or broadcasting is known as telecommunication.
  • In other words, we can say that it is the transmission of signals, messages, words, writings, images and sounds or any kind of information. Without technology, the exchange of information between communication participants is not possible.
  • World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2020: Theme
  • The theme of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) 2020 is “Connect 2030: ICTs for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”.
  •  The theme focuses on ICT advances necessary for a transition to smart and sustainable development. It also highlights the importance of specific ICT enabled solutions and the trend that are emerging for enhancing economic, environmental and social sustainability.
  • The theme of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2019 was “Bridging the standardisation gap”.
  •  The theme focuses on setting the standards which are a fundamental pillar of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) mission as the specialised agency of the United Nations for information and communication technologies (ICTs). The standards of ITU will help in accelerating ICTs for all Sustainable Development Goals.

The theme of 2019 provides opportunities for:

  • Participation of the developing countries in ITU’s standards-making process.
    At the national, regional and international level, it will empower local experts in the standardisation process.
    In developing countries to promote the implementation of international standards.
  • The theme of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2018 was “Enabling the positive use of Artificial Intelligence for All” to focus on the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to increase the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • Artificial Intelligence technology progresses made possible enormous advances in the contributing fields like Big Data, machine learning, computing power, storage capacity and cloud computing etc.
